Our Staff

Michael Homula, Executive Director

Michael came to ICU Mobile, the pioneer and leader of mobile pregnancy center ministry, in October of 2010 from the for profit world where he has over 18 years of corporate recruiting leadership, executive search, human resources and consulting experience.

Called to vocational ministry after an intense time of prayer in 2008, he could never have imagined that his personal story and life journey would be used by the Lord to bring him to the leadership role of ICU Mobile. His birth mother, whose husband was fighting in Vietnam, was raped following an office party in 1969 and became pregnant with Michael as a result. Faced with difficult and confusing circumstances, his birth mother chose to carry him to term and, in what can only be described as the ultimate act of love, she endured labor and delivery to give him life and subsequently placed him for adoption through Catholic Families and Charities.

Michael brings a proven, well documented track record of success and high performance in business and ministry. He was an award winning and well documented recruiting industry thought leader whose career highlights include leading two well recognized recruiting teams at FirstMerit Bank and Quicken Loans where he won back to back Recruiting Excellence Awards in 2005 and 2006 and garnered recognition as the #1 Benchmark Firm In Recruiting and Talent Management for FirstMerit in 2005.

He founded and directed Bearing Fruit Consulting, a full service recruiting strategy consulting firm working with some of the best known and “best kept secret” secular businesses, national and global ministries, missionaries and Bible believing evangelical Churches.

A sought after consultant, key note/inspirational speaker, and conference presenter, Michael has been blessed to speak and share his recruiting expertise, knowledge and success as well as his personal story and testimony with corporations, small and mid-size businesses, ministries and churches all over the United States.

Michael committed his life to following Christ on August 24, 2003 and is a member of The Chapel in Akron, Ohio. He loves to cook, read, enjoys all sports, is a passionate follower of Notre Dame (Go Irish!) and is an avid student of the American Civil War, specifically the battle of Gettysburg. He really loves to spend time with family and friends and vacationing pretty much anywhere there is a beach, warm air and water.

“The best and truest measure of my success in this life and on this earth is the amount of Jesus others see in me. I am nothing. Christ is everything.”

A Personal Note and Reflections From Michael

I dislike that bio. I really do.

I used to be “all about” my bio. I would spend hours trying to craft the perfect sounding statement that made me look like some amazing business or ministry leader. It was always all about me; a vain effort to make myself look good. I am ashamed to admit that but it is true. As result, when I sat down to rewrite my bio for my service at ICU Mobile I wanted to make it a one sentence statement:

I am nothing.  Christ is everything.

Yes, I really wanted to do that. Not because I am some great follower of Christ but because that statement is true. I consulted with some close friends, a pastor at my church and some ministry leaders I respect about my desire to do this. To a person they said that is a wonderful sentiment but it isn’t what people interested in ICU Mobile want to see. They need to know more about the person leading the organization. Disappointed to hear this, I reluctantly wrote the bio you read above.

It all makes me so very uncomfortable though.

While writing it, one of those I consulted with pointed me to [1 Chronicles 17:16-25]. This passage of Scripture from David really reads like a biography of sorts; a humble, God honoring and God pointing biography.

David is pretty awesome.

After learning of Nathan’s revelation that God would establish His Kingdom through David’s offspring, David declares “Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?”

That is how I feel.  Who am I?

I am a sinner.

My bio shows me in a very favorable light, which I guess is what bio’s are supposed to do.  But it makes me so very uncomfortable. Biographies are designed to bring attention to the individual – to glorify my efforts and my accomplishments when it is the Lord who should receive ALL the glory for everything I have accomplished. I hope that I can simply be His servant. To be able to tag along, maybe participate in some small way, as He works His plans. I am so fortunate and blessed to be able to serve Him and His kingdom in any way He decides to use me. Right now that is here at ICU Mobile.

I am fully aware of my own sinfulness and worry that those who read my bio might not have the full picture of who I actually am – a sinner saved only by the grace of the One who loves me way more than I could ever love Him. Thanks only to my friendship with Jesus I am often able to overcome my sinful nature.

I am not perfect, I am only made perfect by Christ and I try my best to keep my eyes fixed on Him [Hebrews 12:2]. I am a work in progress and I am on a lifelong journey to try to be more like Jesus and less like me. It is often a painful road because I very often love me more than I love Him. Again, not something I am proud to say, but if I am being honest that is the truth.

I feel a little more comfortable knowing that those who read my bio above understand these important facts about who I really am.

in HIS service,

michael

Pastor Adam Barton, Director of Ministry Development

Pastor Adam Barton lives in Akron, Ohio with his wife and two sons. His greatest joy and purpose in life are his family and service to the Lord.

Rev. Adam Barton has 13 years of service in full time ministry. Most of that time has been spent with the church where he began his pastoral ministry in 1998. He currently serves at Riverwood Community Chapel as the Director of Spiritual Formation and Apologetics.

Adam brings three years of ministry development experience from the field of missionary aviation where he served as Director of Ministry Partnerships for Spokane Turbine Center, a centralized training facility for missionary pilots that help to reach the most isolated people groups in the world for Jesus Christ.

In 2011, Adam was asked to join the team of ICU Mobile to lead fundraising efforts and help to promulgate the vision and growth of the ministry. He is grateful to be using his gifts with people and development to help expand the fleet of ICU Mobile on a local, national and international level.

“We joined this ministry because of the tremendous effectiveness and results God provides every week throughout the ICU Mobile fleet. My wife and I are honored to serve in a way that literally saves lives and souls in such a strong and tangible way.”

The Mobile

The ICU Mobile ultrasound vehicle has evolved significantly since our founding in 2003. It is THE ONLY fully compliant mobile ultrasound vehicle built specifically for mobile pregnancy center ministry and exclusively for ICU Mobile. While the Mobile itself is just a part of how we executive our ministry, it is certainly the most visible and tangible aspect of what we do. Our first Mobile was a 1986 RV purchased in Versailles, Ohio. Over the years our fleet has consisted of just about every make, model, size and year RV you can imagine. Today, our state of the art Mobile is what the Lord uses to reach women, save lives and share the Gospel.

More about the ICU Mobile

The ICU Mobile is a one of kind mobile ultrasound vehicle that has been carefully planned, custom engineered and uniquely manufactured exclusively for ICU Mobile and our affiliates. Years of experience as the pioneer and leader in mobile ultrasound ministry has fine tuned our approach and provided us with knowledge and expertise in how a mobile ultrasound vehicle should be designed and equipped for maximum effectiveness.

We poured all of our mobile ultrasound best practices into a working relationship with Thor Motor Coach, the worlds’ largest manufacturer of motor homes, who has agreed to work exclusively with ICU Mobile to improve the design and effectiveness of our Mobile. Through this relationship, we are able to provide and deploy a brand new, custom engineered and specially manufactured RV for ICU Mobile and our affiliates. Every new ICU Mobile is under full warrantee and designed to meet the unique needs and challenges of mobile ultrasound ministry.

Once the vehicle is manufactured at Thor in Elkhart, Indiana, it is brought to BUSES International in Lorain, Ohio. BUSES International is a ministry that engineers and converts just about every conceivable vehicle for missionary and ministry organizations all over the world to advance the Kingdom. We are fond of calling them “Gospel Garage”. For ICU Mobile, they provide the custom design and installation of the exam room using their experience and the best practices we have developed as the leaders in mobile ultrasound ministry. Each exam room is custom designed and installed specifically for the purpose of providing medical ultrasound services to women in need and for revealing the truth about the life growing inside of them.

The Mobile brand and trademark wrap have now become synonymous with our ministry. But it is much more than just a brand. The graphics and markings have been purposely designed to be “baby neutral” and woman centric. This reflects our holistic approach to minister to the needs of the woman emotionally, physically and spiritually. Devoid of anything other than the welcoming, neutral, non-judgmental and non-political ICU Mobile brand, the ICU Mobile is uniquely designed to attract women in need; specifically those woman still undecided about their unplanned pregnancy. The uniform appearance provides recognition like FedEx or the Red Cross while gaining widespread acceptance by the community it serves because of the neutral, woman focused approach.

The living room and counseling area of the Mobile has been designed and equipped for comfort. The welcoming atmosphere has been carefully planned to provide a peaceful, non-judgmental and non-coercive environment for women, their family and friends to visit with our trained and skilled counselors and receive the individual attention and care they deserve.

ICU Mobile ultrasound vehicles are custom engineered, manufactured and equipped exclusively for our affiliates to effectively meet the unique needs of mobile ultrasound ministry. The Mobile is the tool that God has been using to fulfill the mission He breathed into ICU Mobile back in 2003, to GO to women experiencing an unplanned pregnancy and reveal life at the crossroads of decision.

Our Volunteer Team

Kelly Carlson, Affiliate Relationship Manager

Graduating with a BS in Education from Ohio University, Kelly began her career in primary education and quickly moved into Instructional Design and Development at a large Telecommunications company. She served as lead developer and principle liaison between technical analysts, developers, sales personnel and the company’s non-technical client base. Moving in program and  project management, Kelly planned and led the execution of a multi-release software rollout for large business units at a national and international level successfully training 100,000+ users with each release. Her other positions include public speaking and facilitation, where she was twice awarded Trainer of the Month for Excellence in Facilitation of leadership, sales, performance coaching, and new hire courses. She also led many students to state and national championships as a speech and Debate Coach.

Kelly began a personal relationship with Jesus Christ in 2003 which launched years of soul-searching and Grace-filled transformation that led her away from the business realm and into ministry.  In 2008, she became one of the first employees of ICU Mobile as well as Director of Development for Pregnancy Solutions & Services in Akron, OH. Currently, Kelly is in her dream occupation as wife of Barry and stay-at-home mother to three boys ages seven to two months.

The transformative work of the Holy Spirit is alive in the Carlson household.  Kelly has been honored to witness both her husband become a Jewish believer in Jesus Christ and her Jewish mother-in-law accept Yeshua as her Savior shortly before her passing.

Kelly is a member of Maranatha Bible Church where she co-teaches Kindergarten Sunday School with her husband and is Coordinator of the Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) program. She also serves on the Development Committee at PSS.

Karen Gniewek, Graphic Designer

She always enjoyed art, but Karen never imagined it’d become her career. In high school, she learned shorthand, typing, and filing in preparation to become a secretary. Those plans changed after browsing through a friend’s University of Akron curriculum guide. A few years later in 1977 with a degree in Commercial Art, she accepted a position in the advertising department of an Akron-based grocery chain. In the years that followed, she enjoyed the changes and challenges as the design industry transitioned from drawing board to computer. She worked as an advertising artist, typesetter and computer illustrator for Boise Cascade, local print shops, and also Goodyear Aerospace, where she met her husband Mark.

In January 2002, after nearly 8 years as The Chapel’s director of publications, her dream of being self-employed became reality. Her home-based graphic design business, Creative Type, grew simply by word of mouth with referrals from former co-workers and from clients. She continues to serve a variety of both commercial and non-profit clients, offering professional quality at budget-friendly prices.

After learning the mission of ICU Mobile, Karen’s first thought was of the amniocentesis in 1990 while pregnant with her son. She remembered how amazing it was to see her baby on the ultrasound screen as the doctor used it during the procedure. She also recalled wondering afterward how anyone would choose abortion after clearly seeing their baby on an ultrasound. She didn’t have to think twice about becoming a volunteer! In 2006, she began serving with both ICU Mobile and Pregnancy Solutions & Services. She considers it a privilege to be part of this unique mobile ministry to save the unborn.

Karen, Mark and their son Mitch live in Green, and are members of Maranatha Bible Church. Besides designing the church’s logo, Karen helps with ads and designs for special events, Bible studies, children’s ministry and the women’s ministry.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. [Colossians 3:23-24]

Our Board

Sylvia Slifko, Founder and Chairman of the Board

After graduating from the University of Akron with a degree in elementary education, Sylvia Slifko worked in the Akron Public school system teaching 5th grade. After 4 years, and the birth of their first child, Sylvia left teaching to raise her family and work with her husband in their residential construction company and rental management business.

In 1990 Sylvia felt a calling from God to get involved in pro-life work, and one year later co-founded Community Pregnancy Center in Barberton, Ohio. In 1995, she left that ministry to start another pregnancy center, Suburban Pregnancy Services which later became Pregnancy Solutions and Services. She is still active there as Board Treasurer.

While working as Executive Director at PSS, Sylvia started a mobile ultrasound ministry, then called Image Clear Ultrasound (ICU), designed to go out to pregnant women who might be considering abortion to show them their unborn babies. That idea grew into a the globall ministry of ICU Mobile where Sylvia now serves as Board Chair.

Sylvia is a member of Marantha Bible Church where she serves as a women’s Bible study leader, and a teacher in the children’s department. She and her husband, Steve, reside in Marshallville, Ohio where they raise buffalo and enjoy life on the farm.
