History was made recently at the University of Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana.

No, the Fighting Irish did not win another national championship. It was simply the first home game of the 2011 season, and in an excruciating exhibition of sloppy play usually foreign to a winning team like Notre Dame, they suffered a frustrating loss to the underdog South Florida Bulls that included 5 turnovers, an unexpected mid-game quarterback change and the predictable ire of coaches and fans.

The Notre Dame “history” I am speaking of is not this embarrassing defeat, but has to do instead with the weather on that fateful game day.

As half-time approached, a powerful lightening and wind storm approached the Notre Dame campus, creating ominous flashes across the sky, dumping heavy rains on the stands and forcing the first-ever evacuation of the 81-year old stadium. Although God’s awesome power was absent that day from the field of the Fighting Irish, it apparently was on display in the sky above.

Sometimes it takes a display of His Majesty in the skies for God to get our attention. The Apostle Paul once had an encounter with God where a flash of lightening initiated one of the most impactful conversions in Christianity. The book of Acts tells us that as Paul traveled to Damascus, “suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, ‘Saul, why do you persecute me’?” “Who are you?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus…..now get up and GO into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” (Acts 9:3-4).

This story reveals how God sometimes gets the attention of those who oppose Him, but whom He desires to use in His Kingdom. He sends something they can’t ignore into their midst, and once He has their attention, gives them specific direction about what to do next.

This sounds remarkably like the mission of ICU Mobile. We are a non-profit ministry of love and grace, deploying and supporting a fleet of mobile pregnancy centers so that every woman experiencing an unplanned pregnancy may have a free opportunity to see her unborn child and hear the Gospel in a non-judgmental, non-political and non-coercive environment. Just like a flash of lightning from the sky, mobile pregnancy centers designed and provided by ICU Mobile are proven “attention-getters”. As our mobile affiliates “get up and GO into cities” with our highly visible mobile ultrasound vehicles, we are getting women’s attention, seeing God display his Majesty, and watching Him declare “I am Jesus” to thousands of pregnant women each year.

God claims in Joel 2:30-32 that He will “show wonders in the heavens….and everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” If you are actively opposing Jesus in your life, look for the sign that Christ is trying to get your attention before it is too late. Call on Him, and be saved.

I recently had the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon at a local beach. Since it was a very hot day, I found a desireable spot right along the water line for my beach chair, allowing me to keep my feet cool in the waves. With the sand and water beneath my feet, a good book in my hands and the warm sunshine above, I could hardly imagine a more idylic way to spend a few hours.

After I had settled in and enjoyed my book for a while, I took notice of a young family heading out into the water. Mom and Dad were already in, but a little girl of maybe three was reluctant. She put up quite a fight when her mother tried to coax her in from the beach.

These patient parents tried everything to work up her courage…..but she shook her head, wimpered from the shore and wouldn’t budge from the sand at the water’s edge.

Things finally changed when her Dad moved toward her with his arms wide open. She eagerly and willingly went into his arms as soon as he reached her. He then turned back toward the water, and out they went together. She kicked and screamed at first, but soon began to relax and smile despite venturing into the depths. Even though she was far out and the waves were splashing up over her legs, her father was holding her tight, and she trusted him to keep her safe no matter how dark, wide, or deep the water looked.

It occurred to me that this is a perfect picture of how God reaches out to a woman facing an unplanned pregnancy.

Consider this remarkable promise of God given in Isaiah 40:11: “He tends His flock like a shepherd, He gathers His lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart; He gently leads those that have young.”

Consumed by fear and reluctance of the big “unknown” of being pregnant, a woman may think she can guarantee her own safety with an abortion, unwilling to venture out into the deep waters of parenthood or adoption. She kicks, screams and cries, saying she can’t possibly carry her child to term. And yet our Heavenly Father is “out in the water” with His arms wide open, beckoning her to come to Him. He coaxes, persuades, and promises her it will be all right. Finally He comes with open arms, to pick her up and carry her in safely.

How?

One way is through mobile pregnancy centers provided by ICU Mobile. Our mobiles can be God’s “everlasting arms” described in Deuteronomy 33:27; reaching out to pregnant women in need, carrying them in safety. As we GO in Christ’s name, the staff and volunteers on our mobile Fleet Affiliates can “ride on the heavens to help” (Deut 33:26), bringing truth, compassion and hope in place of abortion, death and sadness.

If we are honest, each of us feels like a little child on the sand sometimes, afraid of the water, afraid of somethig big we face. And yet God will carry us into the deep if we hold tightly to Him. If we trust Him, we can begin to relax and enjoy the adventure, receiving the blessing and promise that comes from being safely in our Father’s arms.

Do you believe that God sometimes wages war on behalf of His saints?

The Old Testament gives us a great example of this in 2 Chronicles 20:15. Facing destruction at the hands of the entire Moabite and Ammonite armies, the prophet Jahaziel told King Jehoshaphat “Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not your’s, but God’s.”

Every once in a while you get a crisis pregnancy situation where God’s miraculous hand is so abundantly evident in the client’s life that it becomes clear the battle is His.

We had just such a case recently through our Cleveland Mobile Affiliate. A young woman came to our mobile pregnancy center while it was parked at an urban shopping center, asking if she could have an ultrasound. As I completed her pregnancy history, she explained that she was about 10 weeks along, but had visited a local Planned Parenthood clinic much earlier in her pregnancy to receive the “morning after” pill. This drug is marketed as “emergency contraception” but in fact aborts an existing unborn baby in the first days of life.

Despite taking two doses of this abortifacient drug over the course of 5 days, her pregnancy remained intact. Frustrated and  dismayed, she then made an appointment for an abortion at a local clinic. She met her boyfriend there, as he was supposed to bring money with him for the procedure. Because he did not have the entire amount the clinic was demanding, they were turned away from their appointment and had not yet re-scheduled.

Upon hearing this, I began to marvel at what God was doing. Despite three deliberate attempts to abort this baby, the child had somehow defied the odds and was still alive, tucked safely away in the womb.

The client went on to say that if she could just see how big “it” was, that would help her make up her mind about what to do. This is just the type of scenario where mobile pregnancy centers developed by ICU Mobile can reveal life at the crossroads of decision, and help to make the difference between life and death.

Being 10 weeks along, she was at an optimal point for us to provide her with a glimpse of “it”. The ultrasound revealed an active unborn baby with a clearly visable heartbeat. The client was amazed, telling the sonographer, “I think I just changed my mind about having this baby.”

As she exited the medical exam area of our mobile, we were able to give her a fetal model to take home, showing the approximate size of her baby, and an information card with fetal development facts. During our exit interview, she held them both up as we spoke and said “I had no idea the baby was this big and had a heartbeat.”

At this time I rejoiced, and thanked God for this simple yet precious moment when a pregnant woman discovers what she really does carry inside of her- new life.

We continued our discussion with a review of local resources that were available to support her throughout her pregnancy, and then turned the conversation to matters of faith. The client expressed she had a saving faith in Christ, and as we discussed continuing her pregnancy, I suggested that despite her abortion attempts, our gracious God was apparently giving her a another chance to have this baby.

“God really wants this baby to be born” I suggested. “That’s what I’m thinking!” she exclaimed, smiling.

Isaiah 14:27 says “For the Lord Almighty has purposed, and who can thwart Him? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?” God’s hand was outstretched to this fortunate little unborn baby, and not even three attempts at abortion could turn it back.

We thank God for allowing us to GO, and be part of His outstretched hand.

Have you ever wondered what happens to women who have abortions?

I mean inside their soul. We know that the choice to have an abortion can carry some grave health risks, including injury, infection, and future infertility. Women who abort their babies can tell tales of these common physical difficulties, and many more.

But what about the injury to their soul?

As the pioneer and leader of mobile pregnancy center ministry, deploying mobile ultrasound vehicles across the United States and around the world, we are not surprised to be coming across many women who have already had abortions. Some work alongside us as peer counselors, ultrasonographers, clinic sidewalk counselors or pregnancy center staff and volunteers. Others come on our mobile as clients, seeking a pregnancy test or sonogram, and in the course of giving a pregnancy history, often reveal their previous abortions.

It is then that we take the deliberate step of asking: “What was that abortion like for you?”

The responses vary, but have a common theme: “it was hard”. From tales of physical pain to sad stories of emotional turmoil, women pour out their experiences of regret, guilt and other strong feelings related to their abortion. They often become visibly contrite or downcast, and their eyes fill with tears. One woman says “I felt terrible about doing it”. Another says, “I didn’t want to, but my mom wouldn’t accept me being pregnant. She would throw me out.” Another says “It was awful…I could never do it again.” One woman, who admitted to two abortions, said very candidly: “I was so disappointed in myself when I did it again….this time I won’t make that mistake.”

The old expression “Hindsight is 20/20” is never truer than in the decision to abort. In the midst of crisis, women are often blinded to positive possibilities and feel limited to take the only drastic action they can visualize-aborting their baby.

Mobile pregnancy centers deployed in partnership with pregnancy centers by ICU Mobile provide a unique opportunity to reach women in all stages of their abortion story. Whether women are contemplating abortion, have an abortion already scheduled, or are many years past their abortion decision, our comfortable, inviting and medically equipped vehicles serve as an oasis in the abortion desert. Just as the visibility, presence and flexibility of mobile ultrasound ministry allows for timely intervention before a tragic abortion decision, it also miraculously provides opportunities for confession, restoration and healing, years and even decades after an abortion decision.

In 1 John 1:9, we are all given this wonderful promise of God: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” As these abortion stories pour out on our mobiles, the staff and volunteers who serve with our many affiliates minister the love, grace and forgiveness found in Jesus Christ to women who are suffering from guilt, shame and and regret.

Only God could design such a plan to lead His daughters to the oasis. Only God.

Have you ever wondered about God’s purpose for your life?

Maybe you have actively sought out the purpose through the disciplines of prayer, fasting, and asking the advice of spiritual mentors. Maybe the answer has been elusive, and you struggle with feeling like you don’t know where you are headed, what God really wants you to do, or how to use your talents and abilities to advance God’s Kingdom. You may feel like people around you have more of a focus or specific call on their lives than you do. All of this makes you fear that you will always wander in a fog, or worse, that you have somehow missed the call of God on your life.

You are not alone.

There is a reason that Rick Warren’s book, “The Purpose Driven Life”, is the number one-selling Christian book of all time, after the Bible. Even if we have the assurance of our salvation in the Lord Jesus, most of us still ask “What am I supposed to be doing with my life?”

In seeking our answer, we can take some clues from the life of the Lord Himself. It would seem that no one in history could have been more certain of His purpose than Jesus Christ. At merely 12 years of age, Luke 2:49 records Him telling His worried parents “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s House?” Apparently, even as a boy, He was already aware of His purpose, and was acting on it.

Later, at the onset of His public ministry in the synagogue in Nazareth, He proclaims His purpose openly. In Luke 4:18-19, Jesus says “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to preach the Good News to the poor; He has sent me to proclaim freedom to the captives, and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Here Jesus makes clear the connection to His Father, saying “He has anointed me” and “He has sent me”.

After three more years of public ministry, Jesus again revealed His ultimate purpose to His confused disciples when he said “We are GOing up to Jerusalem…..”(Luke 18:31). Little did they know what awaited Him, or them, on that fateful trip.

You see, this was not a glamorous trip to the Holy Land. Jerusalem represented the place where Jesus finally reached the pinnacle of His purpose- the crucifixion. It was here He died for us, becoming the “atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 2:2); here He stood in our place and took our punishment, “dying to sin once and for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring (us) to God” (1 Peter 3:18); here ”He became obedient to death, even death on a cross!”(Philippians 2:8).

To find our purpose, we also must “GO up to Jerusalem.” We must GO to the place where we carry our cross, die to self, and become one with the Father. Oswald Chambers, author of the wonderful devotional “My Utmost for His Highest”, says “the most important aspect of serving Jesus is not the work we perform, but the relationship we maintain, and the qualities produced by that relationship.”

At ICU Mobile, we help pregnancy center ministries GO and introduce Jesus to women facing unplanned pregnancies, so they can be in relationship with Him, and have the qualities that relationship produces. That is simply our work.

Our purpose, and yours, is to stay in true relationship with Him, “the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls” (1 Peter 2:25).

Spend any time in pregnancy care ministry and you will encounter what I call the “walking wounded”.

In first aid and triage, the walking wounded are identified as injured persons who are of a relatively low priority. These patients are conscious and breathing but appear to have only relatively minor injuries; thus they are capable of “walking”. Depending on the resources available, these people are given minimal care or sometimes overlooked in order to deal instead with more seriously injured patients.

The civilian form of “walking wounded” often show up at pregnancy care organizations contemplating abortion.

If you listen carefully to their stories, you often realize just how much these women have been hurt, victimized and abandoned by people, circumstances and experiences that leave them stunned and damaged. Despite suffering the injuries left by divorce, abuse, sexual assault, addictions and more, they continue to stagger through life in a sort of stupefied shock like soldiers wandering from the fog of battle.

These are women for whom an unplanned pregnancy and subsequent desire for abortion are simply the logical outcomes of an already traumatized life. Women who have been repeatedly hurt or victimized are often left bewildered and ill-equipped to handle the resulting complex and raging emotions that drive their behavior and decisions. When abortion seems like a logical solution to their already train-wrecked life, innovative methods can help us to respond quickly and effectively, before it’s too late.

This is the point where mobile pregnancy center ministry easily becomes the game-changer; the new idea or strategy that completely changes the way a situation develops.

Nothing illustrates this better than a recent client encounter I had while volunteering with our Cleveland mobile pregnancy center Fleet Affiliate. Despondent over her situation and experiencing severe morning sickness, a very abortion-minded young woman somehow made her way to our mobile seeking information. She had already scheduled an abortion, but wasn’t willing to drive the nearly 30 miles to the closest pregnancy center. The mobile allowed us to encounter her near her home, provide her with a free ultrasound, and share the healing power of the Gospel message, all in a way that was safe, convenient and life-affirming. We thank God mobile ministry allowed us to reach her in time.

You can help us reach more of these walking wounded before abortion becomes the latest gasoline thrown on their already-raging fire. The mission of ICU Mobile is simple: to deploy a fleet of mobile pregnancy center vehicles that are designed to reach abortion-vulnerable women wherever they are located. It is our commitment to reach abortion minded women, save the unbor and share the love of Jesus. Are you listening to anyone?

While passing some time in a local coffee shop recently, I observed two men the counter, sipping their steamy purchases. Although they came in together and sat side by side, I noticed that they did not converse, or even look at one another. One copiously studied his mobile phone and sent text messages every few seconds, while the other focused on a laptop while listening to his iPod.

I reflected that though they were in each other’s immediate company, they couldn’t be more isolated from one another.

As I looked around the coffee shop, I saw a wide assortment of other people similarly engaged. Laptops, iPods, smart phones and even an old-fashioned newspaper or two deluged them all with information and connectivity to the outside world, yet simultaneously created a cavernous breach between them. Instead of conversation, I heard only the sound of the coffee machines. No one was speaking, and as a consequence, it occurred to me that no one was listening.

Jesus weighed in once about those around Him who didn’t seem to listen. In response to a question from his disciples about why He spoke to the crowds of His day in parables, He replied in Matthew 13:14 “they will be ever hearing, but never understanding; ever seeing, but never perceiving. For this people’s heart has become calloused…otherwise they might see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would heal them.”

Jesus was essentially saying that the crowds were too hard-hearted, busy, and distracted to perceive God, though He was right in their midst. While they apparently saw Him and heard His words, they failed to really listen, and were essentially “deaf” to Him.

It doesn’t seem any different today. Many people seem to be consumed with “hearing” God, eager to buy the latest devotional book, attend the next Christian conference, or visit a church where they’ve heard “God is speaking”. They might even view a download for their smart phone or iPad as yet another way to “hear God”.

And yet it appears these very efforts may be making us blind and deaf to the person God has placed right next to us. The Bible tells us that humanity was spoken into existence by God’s creative word. The people we come across each day therefore represent an on-going dialogue with God. Do we recognize our fellow human beings this way? Do we really believe that they reflect God’s image, and therefore, are worthy of dialogue?

As our affiliates GO, they are equipped not only to reveal life but to share love, truth and God’s wonderful plan of salvation.

Do you remember your childhood science class?

You probably engaged in an experiment with magnets that displayed the principles of positive and negative fields. As you lined up two magnets, they either pulled together or repelled one another. Like most children, you probably thought it was cool when they stuck together and marveled at the funny way it felt in your fingertips when they pushed apart.

The work of pregnancy care organizations like ICU Mobile is another great illustration of the fields of positive and negative. After all, we deal with positive and negative pregnancy tests every day.

I recently had the privilege of serving on the new Cleveland-based mobile pregnancy center as a volunteer peer counselor for the afternoon. This beautiful new vehicle was developed and recently commissioned for service here in Northeast Ohio through the collaborative efforts of five local pro-life groups.

After a time of prayer and reviewing procedures with the ultrasonographer, we began to welcome clients aboard. Over the next three hours, five clients were provided with free pregnancy tests, a New Testament, and literature pertinent to their personal situation. One client brought her mother, another came with a close friend. We listened to each client’s story, remarkably similar and yet unique in their own way. We offered encouragement, information, support, prayer, and the truth of Christ’s love and salvation plan with each young woman.

What could possibly be negative about this?

All five of the pregnancy test results. Not surprisingly, all five clients met these negative test results with relief. And while we were also relieved that these young women were not facing unwanted pregnancies, we saw another positive side of so many negative test results.

Although God did not permit us to provide any ultrasounds during that day of ministry, we nonetheless had the opportunity to discuss each client’s spiritual beliefs. Their stories of emptiness, despair, rebellion and hopelessness are not unfamiliar to anyone involved in pregnancy care. One admitted she had “lost her faith in God” after watching her best friend die from cancer. Another was an atheist, and still another said she wished she could refrain from sex with her “sometime” boyfriend, but didn’t know how. In each case, we listened and did what we could to show love, share truth and explain God’s plan of salvation.

In Romans 10:14-15, the apostle Paul asks a series of rhetorical questions: “How can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to tell them? And how can someone tell them unless they are sent?”

This is why we GO; if we are unable to reveal life through complimentary ultrasound on our mobiles, we can still share in the privilege of telling young women about the wonderful love and forgiveness of God. At ICU Mobile, our fleet of mobile pregnancy center affiliates experience this positive side of negative every day.

I occasionally venture down to an area of Cleveland, Ohio where 2 abortion clinics are located about a block apart. I go there not to protest or yell, but to pray quietly and sometimes offer a word of hope or encouragement to people approaching or leaving the clinics. This particular neighborhood of Cleveland has the third-highest abortion rate in the city, standing at 344 children lost in 2009, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

The two abortion clinics located here are thriving.

It’s another story for the neighborhood. I note empty spaces that cause me to reflect on the havoc abortion is wreaking in our communities. I see a neat and tidy city playground located barely half a block from the clinics, marked with a bright yellow road sign showing a teeter-totter with two child figures. I am forced to walk by it as I approach the clinics, and I reflect on the irony of this “child-marker” barely 20 yards from an abortion clinic.

Though the playground boasts soft green grass, a variety of inviting swings and climbing sets, and an attractive fence to protect little guests from the busy road, it is, invariably, completely empty. “No one is enjoying the park” I observe. “Where are the children that used to be in this neighborhood?”

“Oh wait” I answer myself. “Many have been aborted inside these clinics.” I am overcome for a few moments with sadness, thinking of children who will never enjoy the thrill of a high swing, attend nearby schools or enjoy the brand new library located just down the street. I reflect on how abortion can arrest the vitality of a neighborhood and render many of its’ amenities unused.

As I stand outside the clinic and begin to pray, I get a glimpse of more empty spaces. Unused car seats are often visible in the departing vehicles. Parents inside the abortion facility have left an existing older child in the care of sitters or relatives. As a mother of two children myself, I find it hard to fathom a parent sacrificing their own child’s sibling. I think of little families already formed, and yet the newest member will never be welcomed. What empty space of the heart will both parent and child experience as a result?

1 Peter 5:8 says “Your enemy the devil prowls around looking for someone to devour.” I fear that our urban communities are being devoured, and cannot sustain this attack much longer. The composition and well-being of entire neighborhoods is being fundamentally altered by abortion. How can we even hope to prevent more empty spaces?

At ICU Mobile, we rely on the words of Jesus in John 10:10: “I am come that you may have life, and that to the full.” As we GO into urban neighborhoods, equipping local pregnancy care organizations with mobile pregnancy center vehicles, we ask Jesus to GO with us, filling these empty spaces with His love, forgiveness and abundant provision.

As we head in to the annual celebration of Independence Day, I think with amazement about the founding of our country. The human desire for liberty, coupled with the courageous rebellion of the Colonies and the bravery of the Continental army, produced the unique system of representative and limited government, religious freedom and bountiful private commerce that we enjoy today.

The Colonist’s act of defiance to King George of England, the Declaration of Independence, outlined their rationale for forging a new nation: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness-That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed.”

Despite claiming the “self-evidence” of the equality of all men, the inequality of slavery was allowed to flourish, and 85 years later, our nation found itself embroiled in the Civil War. After two years of fighting, the war seemed to turn decidedly in 1863 at the battle of Gettysburg, where a generation of American soldiers defended their ideas of freedom in an epic, three-day battle. Though the abolitionist North prevailed, at a tremendous human cost, the war would rage on for nearly three more long years. When the dead would finally be counted, our nation lost more than 618,000 men.

Sensing that the course of the war had turned in favor of the Union, President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address four months later near the shallow graves of both Union and Confederate forces. In this short but eloquent speech, he declared “…that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

Why the history lesson?

To remind us all that the freedoms we enjoy came at a high price, and are not guaranteed. Despite two wars for freedom fought on American soil, there persists an imbalance of power between parties, groups and individuals, an imbalance that plays out in today’s national dialogue. We rightly cling to the high ideal of “liberty and justice for all”, yet we continue to war among ourselves about what kind of nation we will be, what justice and equality really mean, and who among us will be free.

Celebrating and preserving our freedoms is important, but there is a true inner freedom that no war or political movement can bring. 2 Corinthians 3:17 says “The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom”. The only true freedom is in the forgiveness and reconciliation that Christ offers us. He went to the cross to pay our debt for sin, release us from our captivity, and secure us for heaven.

Generations of American soldiers have bravely secured our personal freedoms, but only Christ can secure our spiritual freedom. “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him, and to our God, for He will freely pardon” Isaiah 55:7.
